Check out the infographic below from The Economist on computing platforms and units shipped:

In a word, wow.

I’d note that units shipped is but one proxy for the power of a platform. The power and value of Apple’s planks and overall platform cannot be reduced to number of units shipped (although that is certainly part of Apple’s meteoric success). Doing so minimizes the value of its significant ecosystem.

And let’s not equate the little red iPad line with Apple’s impact here. It’s nothing less than transformative, irrespective of the relatively small number of units shipped.
