On Sunday, I’ll be talking to Steve Hogarth of Marillion, one of my favorite bands. Our interview will run The Huffington Post sometime next week. I’ve drawn up some questions but would love to hear any suggestions. Just put them in the comments.

Update: 09.08.12

The questions are flying in. Rather than play The Almighty, I’ll send this post to Steve and let him select the questions that he’d prefer to answer. Some great ones are already here!

What did you and Fish talk about this week ?

  2. Ian Williams

Are you surprised by the reaction from some of the fans to the story you tell in the song Gaza?

  3. Happiness

    What’s a Universe Bead?

  4. Ian Williams

Do you actually “enjoy” the process of songwriting? Your lyrics are often emotionally wrought and it’s clear you put a lot of yourself into them.

  5. Happiness

Please ask h, what’s a Universe Bead? Thanks!

  6. Will

Does he know how much Marillion fans love him? The man is a star.

  7. Serena

    What’s a Universe Bead?

    • Phil Simon

That’s not an offensive question, is it? Don’t want to tick him off.

  8. Will

How does he rate the new album with the others? Does he like touring still?

  9. sascha woell

Have you considered getting or even have a license for riding a motor-bike ? ….thinking of the romantic memories you describe in TSE with your father on the backseat of his triumph ….etc. + THANKS for GAZA

  10. Anouk Peters from Holland

Where does h get his condition from ? Does hè any kind of sports ?

  11. Alessio

Have you ever think to leave the band? If yes…. Why?

  12. Tony Pilkington

Would you please ask him does he still carry the “Power of now concept ” with him in his life ? In relation to the book that insipired Happines is the road ! Cheers Tony Pilkington

  13. Alan Blamires

I read once that you were inspired to be a musician after seeing Deep Purple at Sheffield??? … how did you feel when you ended up supporting them last year,an almost full circle? [email protected]

  14. Pete Waite

Do you get (m)any requests to sing on other projects? Is there anyone you would like to work with?

    • Phil Simon

I like this one quite a bit.

  15. Maartje Lindeman

Mr. H is a poet (apart from being à great singer) in my opinion. Does he ever consider writing poetry, without putting lyrics and music together?

  16. Lisa Marie Lindenschmidt

I’d be curious to hear more about Hogarth’s spirituality. I see such a strong influence in his lyrics and would love to hear him talk more about his approach to music from that base.

    • Joachim

      yea, I second that!

  17. Dave King

As a young lad growing up in the years before your teens, did you aspire to be a musician ? If so, what advice would you give a similar young lad who is 10 and musically inclined.

  18. Kirt

How is the Conspicuously Unsuitable Girlfriend? (He will understand) What is his reaction to how the speed of media has effected the world? By the way, ask if he received the t-shirt I sent him.

  19. Lu

Do you think there’s any simple and obvious question for you that nobody has asked before and the answer would explain a bit more about yourself as a lyricist?

  20. Chris Plite

You have admitted you were into a much different style of music than what Marillion was playing when you joined the band. Do you have any ambitions to create any music that more reflects the music of the bands that inspired you as a kid when you were growing up? It’s obvious you’ve brought much of that influence into Marillion’s music and made them a more complex band, but what about something just completely different than what Marillion fans have come to expect? That being said, if you could work with anyone, who would you love to work with in the music industry in creating a “dream” band for yourself? Lastly would you ever consider harmonizing with another singer on a body of work? The idea of you and a female vocalist sharing singing duties makes my ears tingle just thinking about it! Much love to you H, thank you for making such powerful, thought provoking music.

  21. Mike

I am very curious to know why Mr H the last couple of years has changed so many of the melodies and rythmic phrases for the Marillion-songs when the band plays them live. Sometimes I miss the originals. Especially the part “Just when I thought I’d seen” in The Great Escape. Thanks, Mike

  22. Simon

You a natural performer but so un-“Hollywood Darling”. The relationship with the crowd when performing has become a very intimate yet intense thing. How do you put aside your day’s troubles and keep delivering at such an incredible level night after night.

  23. Xavier

    Is h vegetarian?

  24. Homan

    What’s next for Marillion?

  25. Reza Miladifard from Persia .

    Hi,
Will Mr. h possibly have another live concert with his h band like Live Spirit Live Body ?

  26. Joachim

What was he on when recording the last minute of Strange Engine?

  27. Phil Simon

Wow… I’ll have a bunch to sift through. Too bad that I only have 20-30 minutes with him. I’ll take a few of these to guy with my own.

  28. Magda Aguilera

    Who inspires You???

  29. Roberto

Which is your favorite Fish era song to perform ?

  30. Jed

If h had to add two or three more showtunes to his h Live show repertoire (like if crazy aliens were making him do it), which ones would he add? He already does “On the Street Where You Live.”

  31. Phil Simon

Just did the interview. Look for it soon. I didn’t want to go more than 20 minutes because it was late there. I was able to work in a few of these questions. Fair warning: I couldn’t get to them all and Steve was understandably interested in talking about the new album.

He’s a very nice guy, very personable. Nice to see that he’s a humble bloke.

  32. fubar_saunders

Holy moly, I was there in Cardiff for this gig. He’s too modest, no way was it a car crash. A great show, as it always is.

    • Phil Simon

      He’s a very humble guy.

      • fubar_saunders

and the best thing that happened to them. Very heartened to hear of his affection for the likes of Buchanan, MacAloon and co. Top bloke and for my money, right up there with the likes of Coverdale, Plant, Tyler and Steve Perry as great rock vocalists of the last 40 years.

      • Phil Simon

        I would have to agree.

  33. boobler

my god, can hoggie let phil speak?
