OpenAI head honcho Sam Altman wants to raise another $50 billion. That's on top of the nearly $59B over its previous nine funding rounds. (Yes, nine.)

Why so much? The answer isn't complicated.

His company is burning cash at an astonishing rate. Put simply, it desperately needs beaucoup bucks.

A $50-billion cash infusion, however, won't solve all of OpenAI's financial problems. Not even close. Something else is afoot at the maker of the popular chatbot—and it's not exactly a novel gambit.
